Fixes
Step-by-step fixes for common Character.AI problems.
- Is There a Character.AI Message Limit? What the Caps Actually Cover Character.AI's own blog says free plans keep unlimited messaging, so there is no published daily cap on ordinary chat messages. What free users do hit are separate limits on swipes, Go-ons and voice memos (metered since March 2026), daily allowances on premium chat styles, and slow-downs at busy times. Under-18 accounts are a different case: open-ended chat was removed for them in November 2025.
- Character.AI 'No Longer Eligible' and Age Check Messages Explained Since November 2025, Character.AI no longer offers open-ended chat to users under 18, and it uses age assurance to sort accounts. If you are flagged as under 18, chat is replaced by a restricted experience. Adults flagged by mistake can verify through Settings, Advanced, Verify Age, which uses a selfie first and an ID only if needed, according to the help centre. A separate 'no longer eligible' login error in August 2026 was reportedly a bug.
- Character.AI Not Working or Down? How to Check and What to Try First check whether the problem is on Character.AI's side: outage trackers and recent posts in r/CharacterAI show quickly if many people are affected. If it is only you, refresh, clear the site's cache, switch between app and browser, and turn off extensions or VPNs. If your account is locked rather than broken, the cause may be an age check, not an outage.
- Character.AI Swipe Limit: What Changed and How to Work Around It Since March 2026, Character.AI has metered swipes (regenerated replies), Go-ons and voice memos for free users, while c.ai+ subscribers were described as exempt. The company has not published the number; users report a daily, account-wide cap. When you hit it, ordinary messaging still works, so you can steer the reply with your next message instead of swiping.
Alternatives
Where people go when Character.AI is not working for them.
- Chai AI Alternatives: Free Limits, Prices and Policies Compared Chai is an 18+ mobile chat app from Chai Research Corp. Its US App Store listing shows coin-style 'Pieces' packs from $2.79 and subscriptions from $9.99 to $29.99 (checked 18 October 2026), and recent public reviews often mention new daily limits. If free use matters most, Character.AI says its messaging is free and unlimited, while PolyBuzz and Talkie are free with ads.
- Character AI Alternatives in 2026: How to Choose the Right One There is no single best Character.AI alternative. Decide first how much content filtering you want, then compare memory, personas, group chat, voice, free limits, price and privacy. Every app here that states an age rule sets it at 18 or older, and several now verify age. Prices below are US prices seen on official pages or official app store listings on 18 October 2026.
- Character AI Alternatives With No Filter: What 'Unfiltered' Really Means 'No filter' is a marketing phrase, not a policy. Every app here keeps a prohibited content list, requires users to be adults, and can remove content or accounts. What changes is whether adult themes are allowed behind an age check or toggle. Character.AI says pornographic content is against its terms, so adults who want mature roleplay look elsewhere.
- Character AI Alternatives With Personas: Who Lets You Play Whom A persona can mean the character you talk to or the identity you play. For user personas, SpicyChat publishes the clearest limits (up to 10, 50 or 100 by paid tier), Janitor AI lets you edit and swap personas, and CrushOn AI uses attachable profile cards. Nomi and Kindroid focus on shaping one companion's backstory instead.
- Janitor AI Alternatives: What to Compare Before You Switch Janitor AI is an 18+ storytelling platform with user personas, an in-house model of about 8K to 9K tokens of context, optional API proxies and a janitor+ plan ($12.99 a month on the US App Store, checked 18 October 2026). The closest documented alternative is SpicyChat, which publishes context sizes by tier and supports group chats of 2 to 10 bots. CrushOn AI offers per-character content ratings.
