Character.AI Not Working or Down? How to Check and What to Try
Character.AI not loading, stuck or showing 'something went wrong'? How to tell an outage from a local problem, step-by-step fixes and when to wait.
Built from the product's official documentation, pricing and policy pages, not from our own hands-on use. How we review
When Character.AI stops loading, hangs on a reply or shows a vague error, the first question is simple: is it you, or them? Most fixes depend on the answer, and a few minutes of checking can save an hour of reinstalling.
This guide covers how to check for an outage, the common causes users report, step-by-step fixes, and when the only option is to wait. It is documentation-based. We have not reproduced any of these errors ourselves; the steps combine general troubleshooting with what third-party guides and trackers report.
First, check whether it is them
Character.AI does not appear to maintain a public, regularly updated status page that we could load for this guide, so third-party sources do most of the work:
- Outage trackers. StatusGator and Downdetector collect user reports and show spikes. StatusGator’s history lists recent short incidents in early October 2026, including slow service and the website being unavailable, and notes that these were not officially acknowledged by Character.AI.
- Community posts. During a wide outage, r/CharacterAI usually fills with posts describing the same symptom within minutes.
- A second device. If the site fails on your phone’s mobile data and your laptop’s Wi-Fi at the same time, a local cause is unlikely.
Trackers can lag or overcount, so look for agreement between at least two of these signs.
Is it you or them?
| Symptom | Many others report it? | Likely side | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Site or app will not load at all | Yes | Character.AI | Wait and check back |
| Site will not load | No | Yours | Steps 1 to 5 below |
| “Something went wrong” on one chat only | No | Probably that chat | Start a new chat or reload the character |
| Long wait before replies at busy times | Often | Load on Character.AI | Try off-peak |
| Pop-up about swipes or Go-ons | Not an error | A free-tier limit | See swipe limit guide |
| Chat locked, asked to verify age | Not an outage | Account status | See no longer eligible guide |
Common causes users report
Busy periods and slow mode
Character.AI has long queued free users at busy times. Its 2023 c.ai+ announcement listed “skip waiting rooms” as a paid perk, and its September 2026 post lists “less slow mode” as a benefit of the lite plan. Slow replies at peak hours may be working as designed rather than broken.
The generic error message
“Something went wrong” gives no detail. RoboRhythms, a third-party guide, describes three typical situations behind it: server overload, a moderation response triggered by a specific message, and stale cached data on your device. We could not confirm this breakdown from Character.AI.
Limits and account states that look like errors
Metered swipes, premium chat style allowances and the under-18 experience can all feel like the app has stopped working. Character.AI removed open-ended chat for under-18 users by 25 November 2025, so an account placed in that experience cannot chat, even when everything is up.
Step-by-step fixes
Work through these in order. Stop when it works.
- Hard refresh. On a computer, use Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac). On a phone, fully close the app and reopen it.
- Check your connection. Load another site. Toggle Wi-Fi or switch to mobile data.
- Switch between app and website. If one works and the other does not, the problem is local to the one that fails.
- Clear cached data for the site or app. In a browser, clear cached files and cookies for character.ai only. On Android, clear the app’s cache in system settings. Clearing data rather than cache will sign you out, so have your login ready.
- Turn off extensions and VPNs. Ad blockers, privacy extensions and some VPN routes can interfere with sites. Try a private window, which usually runs without extensions.
- Update the app or browser. Old versions can break after a site update.
- Start a new chat. If only one conversation fails, open the character again from its page and start fresh. A very long chat or one particular message may be the trigger.
- Wait 15 to 30 minutes, then retry. Many short incidents clear without anything you do.
- Contact support if it persists for one account only. Include your device, app version, the exact error text and what you have tried.
Worked example
Your phone app shows “something went wrong” on every message. You open character.ai in your phone browser and it works. That rules out an outage and your account. Clearing the app’s cache, then updating it, is the logical next step. If the browser had failed too, checking a tracker before touching anything would have been the better move.
When it is their side
If trackers and community posts agree there is a problem, there is nothing to fix locally. Avoid repeatedly reinstalling or creating new accounts, which can cause new problems. Check back after a while, ideally at a quieter hour.
The bigger picture: the company’s situation
On 12 October 2026, Character.AI announced it had started a voluntary Chapter 11 process to support a court-supervised sale. The company says the platform “remains up and running”, that users can access all services, and that paid subscriptions remain active with billing unchanged for now. It also says that if no bid keeps the platform operating, it will be wound down, and it expects the sale to finish around late November or early December 2026. The post says users can still export their data or delete their accounts through the app or website.
An ordinary outage is not a sign of shutdown. But if you have chats or characters you care about, exporting your data now is a sensible precaution.
If nothing works
If Character.AI keeps failing at the times you use it, or you want a backup while the sale plays out, compare other companion apps on what they document about reliability and data export. Start with our Character.AI alternatives or the companion matcher. If you are moving to a roleplay platform, our guides to Janitor AI not working and Chub AI not working cover their common errors.
What we could not confirm
- Whether Character.AI runs an official public status page. One address we tried did not load as a public page.
- The exact causes behind the generic error message.
- Live status on the day you read this. Always check a tracker.

Frequently asked questions
Is Character.AI down right now?
We cannot tell you live status from an article. Third-party trackers such as StatusGator and Downdetector collect reports, and r/CharacterAI usually fills with posts during a wide outage. If many people report the same thing, it is on Character.AI's side.
What does 'something went wrong' mean on Character.AI?
It is a generic error. Third-party guides attribute it to server load, a moderation response on a specific message, or stale cached data. A refresh and cache clear fixes local cases; server-side cases need waiting.
Why does Character.AI work on my laptop but not my phone?
That usually points to a local issue with one app or browser, such as cached data or an outdated app. Update the app, clear its cache, or use the website until it is fixed.
Is Character.AI shutting down?
Not at the time of writing. On 12 October 2026 Character.AI announced a voluntary Chapter 11 sale process and said the platform remains up and running. It also said the platform would be wound down if no buyer keeps it operating.
Will clearing data delete my chats?
Chats are stored on your Character.AI account, not in the browser, but clearing site data or app data signs you out. Make sure you know your login details before you clear anything.
