Few Character.AI messages cause as much worry as being told you are “no longer eligible”, or finding that your chat box has been replaced by a request to verify your age. Most of these messages trace back to one policy change: Character.AI no longer offers open-ended chat to users under 18.

This guide explains that change, how age assurance works according to Character.AI’s help centre, how adults flagged by mistake can fix it, and the safety points worth knowing. It is documentation-based. Character.AI’s help centre blocks automated page fetches, so its details here come from the company’s blog, news coverage and the help pages as they appear in search results. We have not been through the verification flow ourselves.

What changed for under-18 users

On 29 October 2025, Character.AI published “Taking Bold Steps to Keep Teen Users Safe”. The post said open-ended chat with characters would be removed for users under 18 no later than 25 November 2025. In the meantime, under-18 chat time was capped at two hours a day, shrinking in the weeks before the deadline.

The company said it was building an under-18 experience around creative features, such as videos, stories and streams with characters. TechCrunch quoted the CEO saying, “We’re not shutting down the app for under 18s.”

To decide who counts as under 18, Character.AI said it built its own age assurance model and would combine it with third-party tools, including Persona. TechCrunch reported that facial and ID checks would be used if the other methods failed.

How age assurance works, per the help centre

According to Character.AI’s help pages, as shown in search results:

  • The system first estimates age from signals such as login information and activity on the platform.
  • If it needs more, you may be asked for a quick selfie, processed by Persona.
  • A government-issued ID is requested only if Persona cannot confirm your age from the selfie. The FAQ says some users will need an ID based on the face scan result, and that without one the process cannot be completed.
  • Users verified as under 18 are placed in the under-18 experience, which includes reading mode. Chat with characters is not available there.
  • Age assurance is rolling out gradually, so not everyone sees the prompt at the same time.

PiunikaWeb reported in March 2026 that some users saw a 14-day countdown telling them to verify before they might lose access to chats, while others only found the option in settings.

The August 2026 “no longer eligible” login error

A different problem surfaced in August 2026. RoboRhythms reports that users were shown a date-of-birth prompt, and that entering an adult birthday returned “you’re no longer eligible to keep using our services” followed by a logout. The guide says staff described this publicly as a date-of-birth and login issue with no risk of data loss.

We could not find the original staff statement, so treat this as reported rather than confirmed. The practical point is that a sudden, widespread “no longer eligible” wave is more likely a bug than a decision about your account.

Is it you or them?

What you see Likely cause What to do
Many users report the same message at once A bug or rollout problem Wait and check community posts before acting
Pop-up asking you to verify age, chat still works Age assurance prompt or countdown Verify through settings if you are an adult
Chat locked, reading only Account placed in the under-18 experience Verify, or contest via a support ticket
Selfie check fails Selfie result inconclusive Retry in good light, or complete the ID step
You are under 18 The policy applies to you See the safety notes below

Step-by-step: if you are an adult and were flagged

  1. Check whether it is widespread. If r/CharacterAI is full of the same message, wait for a fix before changing anything.
  2. Update the app. The help centre says the verify option needs an up-to-date app.
  3. Open Settings, Advanced, Verify Age. This route exists on both the app and the website, according to the help centre.
  4. Take the selfie carefully. Good, even lighting and your full face in view give the check the best chance. Remove anything covering your face.
  5. Have an ID ready in case it is requested. The FAQ says an accepted ID is required if the selfie step cannot confirm your age.
  6. Contest a wrong result through support. The help centre says users placed in the under-18 experience by mistake can contest it with a ticket. Include what happened and when.
  7. Do not create new accounts. Users report that this does not help, and misstating your age is against the rules.

If you cannot even sign in to reach settings, try the website on a computer, and contact support with the exact wording of the message.

Privacy: what happens to your selfie or ID

Character.AI’s help centre says it does not collect or store personal data submitted during age verification. It says Persona automatically and permanently deletes biometric data and ID images within 7 days. If you are uneasy, read Persona’s own privacy policy before you start, and our AI companion privacy checklist for wider checks.

Character.AI’s October 2026 bankruptcy announcement says its data privacy and security practices are unchanged during the sale process.

Safety notes

The under-18 changes followed lawsuits and wider concern about teenagers forming intense attachments to chatbots. If you are under 18 and feel upset about losing access to a character, that reaction is common and understandable. Talking to someone you trust helps.

If you or someone you know is struggling or thinking about self-harm, contact local emergency services or a crisis line. In the US, you can call or text 988. Character.AI also links support resources from its teen safety post.

If nothing works

If you are an adult and cannot get past verification, or you do not want to submit a selfie, other apps may suit you better. Compare options in our Character.AI alternatives or use the companion matcher. Check each app’s own age rules first. If you decide to leave, read our guide to switching from Character.AI before deleting anything, because the data export can take 3 to 4 weeks. What we could not confirm

  • The full text of the help centre pages, which block automated access. We relied on search result summaries.
  • The staff statement about the August 2026 login error.
  • How long a contested case takes to resolve.
