Character.AI Swipe Limit: What Changed and How to Work Around It
Character.AI meters swipes, Go-ons and memos for free users since March 2026. What is official, what users report, and how to keep a chat moving.
Built from the product's official documentation, pricing and policy pages, not from our own hands-on use. How we review
Swiping is how many Character.AI users fix a reply that misses. You swipe, the character tries again, and you pick the version that fits your story. In 2026 that habit started running into a cap for free users.
This guide explains what changed, what Character.AI has and has not said, what users report, and how to keep a chat moving when the swipes run out. It is documentation-based, built from news coverage, the company’s blog and community reports. We have not measured the cap ourselves.
What a swipe is, and what else is metered
Three features are involved, and they are easy to mix up:
- Swipe: asks the character to regenerate its last reply, giving you an alternative.
- Go-on: asks the character to continue its reply without you writing anything.
- Memo: plays a reply back as voice.
According to PiunikaWeb’s March 2026 report, Character.AI posted on its official Discord that it would add usage limits to all three for free users “in the coming weeks”. The report said c.ai+ subscribers would be exempt and that the company linked the change to infrastructure costs. Ordinary messages were not part of the change.
What happened and when
| Date | What was reported | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| March 2026 | Character.AI announces limits on swipes, Go-ons and memos for free users | News report of an official Discord post |
| Around 18 March 2026 | Some free users see a pop-up that their daily swipes are used up | News report with a user screenshot |
| April 2026 | Large r/CharacterAI threads object to the change | Community |
| Late September 2026 | Pop-up reportedly stops showing a number | Single third-party guide, unconfirmed |
How many swipes do you get?
Character.AI has not published the number. That is the most important fact here, because many blogs present figures as if they were official.
What exists instead:
- PiunikaWeb reported that a figure of 10 swipes circulated on Reddit early on, but was never verified.
- RoboRhythms reports that the cap observed by users settled at roughly 400 swipes a day, counted across the whole account rather than per character. It also says the reset is at 00:00 UTC. These are observations, not company statements, and we could not confirm them.
- The same guide reports a separate cap on how many times one reply can be regenerated. We could not find an official source for that either.
Because the company has not committed to a number, it can change without notice.
What users report
Community reaction has been strongly negative. The common argument in r/CharacterAI threads, including a well-upvoted April 2026 post, is that swiping is not a bonus feature: when a reply goes wrong, swiping is how you recover it. Commenters also complained that Go-ons were limited at the same time. Some replies in these threads promote other apps, so read them critically.
Is it you or them?
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pop-up saying daily swipes are used up | You hit the free-tier cap | Keep chatting with new messages; wait for the reset |
| Pop-up about Go-ons or memos | A separate metered budget | Write the next message yourself |
| Swipe spins and fails with no pop-up | Possibly a service problem | See Character.AI not working |
| Swipe works but replies all look similar | Not a limit; the model is repeating itself | Change your message or start a new chat |
| Chat input locked entirely | Age or eligibility check | See no longer eligible guide |
Step-by-step: keep a chat moving without swipes
- Confirm it is the swipe cap. Read the pop-up. If it names swipes, Go-ons or memos, you have hit metering, not an outage.
- Steer with your next message. Character.AI’s September 2026 blog post says free users keep unlimited messaging. Instead of swiping, write a short correction in your next turn, such as “Let’s rewind: he refuses the offer.”
- Edit your own message. Rewording what you said often changes the reply more than another swipe would. We could not confirm whether every editing method avoids the cap, so watch the counter if one appears.
- Write more yourself. If you give the character more to work with, fewer replies miss, so you need fewer swipes.
- Save swipes for key moments. Use them on turns that matter to the story rather than small exchanges.
- Start a fresh chat if replies keep missing. A long chat can drift. A clean start with a short recap often helps more than repeated swipes.
- Consider a plan only if the numbers work for you. Coverage of the announcement said c.ai+ would not be metered. The September 2026 post describes c.ai+ as offering unlimited premium chats. Check the current plan page before paying, and see our subscription costs guide.
Worked example
Imagine you are writing a mystery with a detective character. The reply has the detective solve the case far too early. Before the cap, you might swipe five times. With the cap, write instead: “Not yet. He finds a clue but misreads it.” The next reply follows your direction, and you have used an ordinary message rather than a swipe.
Should you pay to remove the cap?
That depends on how much you rely on swiping, and on the company’s future. On 12 October 2026, Character.AI announced a voluntary Chapter 11 process to sell the business. It says the platform remains up and running and paid subscriptions remain active, but also that the platform will be wound down if no buyer keeps it operating. If you do subscribe, a short billing period is easier to exit. Our guide to cancelling AI subscriptions explains where to cancel depending on how you paid.
Related limits
The swipe cap is one of several. Our Character.AI message limit guide explains how it fits with premium chat style allowances and slow mode, and why ordinary messages are still described as unlimited.
If nothing works
If the cap makes Character.AI frustrating for the way you write, compare other apps on how they handle regeneration and free usage. See our Character.AI alternatives or try the companion matcher to narrow the field.
What we could not confirm
- The official daily swipe number, Go-on budget or memo budget.
- The reset time.
- Whether the cap differs between the app and the website.
- Whether Charms (Character.AI’s in-app currency) can currently buy extra swipes. Third-party sources disagree.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a swipe limit on Character.AI?
Yes, for free users. News reports in March 2026 said Character.AI announced on its Discord that swipes, Go-ons and memos would be limited, and users began seeing a daily swipe pop-up around 18 March 2026.
How many swipes do free users get?
Character.AI has not published a figure. A third-party guide reports roughly 400 a day across the whole account, based on what users observed. Treat any number as unofficial.
Does c.ai+ remove the swipe limit?
Coverage of the March 2026 announcement said c.ai+ subscribers would not face these limits. Check the current plan page before paying, because plan details can change.
Can I still chat after hitting the swipe limit?
Yes. Character.AI's blog says the free plan keeps unlimited messaging, so you can keep the conversation going by writing a new message.
When does the swipe limit reset?
It is described as a daily limit. One third-party guide says it resets at 00:00 UTC, but we could not confirm the reset time from Character.AI.
