Where people go when Nectar AI is not working for them.

Switching From Character.AI: How to Back Up Your Chats and Where People Are Going Request your Character.AI data export today, because the help centre says it can take 3 to 4 weeks and the download link lasts 7 days. Copy your character definitions and personas by hand while you wait. Then pick a replacement by need, not by hype: Candy AI for an adult companion with voice and images, CrushOn AI for a rated community library, SpicyChat for published memory sizes at a low entry price, Nectar AI for building your own characters, Janitor AI or a SillyTavern setup if you want control over the model. No app we checked matches Character.AI's free unlimited text, so budget for that. Checked 19 October 2026

Safety

Privacy, age rules and staying safe.

Character.AI Is Being Sold: What Happens to Your Chats, Data and Subscription Character.AI is running a court-supervised sale that it expects to finish in late November or early December 2026. The platform is up, billing is unchanged for now, and the company says its privacy policy and data practices have not changed. What has not been said is whether your chats are part of what is being sold, or what happens to them if no buyer keeps the platform running. The one thing fully in your control is a data export, which the help centre says can take 3 to 4 weeks. Request it now, keep any subscription monthly, and do not delete your account before the export arrives. Checked 19 October 2026
