Anime AI companion apps in 2026: which ones are worth it
Anime AI companion apps compared from official pages: anime characters, build-your-own, anime-style images, prices, free tiers and age rules, 23 Oct 2026.

Prices change and can differ by country and currency; the official page is the final word. App names marked with a partner programme are affiliate links. "Best for" summarises the published features and user reports in our guides, not our own tests.
Adults only. The apps in this guide set 18 as their minimum age in their own documents, carry an 18+ App Store rating, or restrict adult features to over-18s. Several are built for adult roleplay. This guide compares features, prices and rules, and contains no explicit content.
How this guide was made. This is a documentation-based guide. Every fact below comes from the companies’ own websites, help centres, terms, pricing pages and US App Store listings, read on 23 October 2026. Where an app’s own pages say nothing, as with Grok’s anime companion, we use TechCrunch and NBC News reporting and say so. We did not create accounts or chat with characters, so nothing here judges writing quality, art quality or how well memory works over time. Prices are in US dollars and change by country, platform and promotion. More on our method in how AITried reviews AI products.
What “anime AI companion” means in practice
People searching for an anime AI girlfriend, boyfriend or companion usually want one of four different things, and each is sold by a different kind of app:
- One companion you design, drawn in anime style. You pick the look, personality and voice, and the app sends anime-style pictures of your character. Candy AI, Nomi and Nectar AI work like this.
- A library of anime characters. Thousands of user-made characters, browsable by an Anime tag or section, mostly for roleplay and stories. SpicyChat, PolyBuzz, Character.AI and Janitor AI work like this.
- Characters from a specific anime you already love. These exist only as fan-made bots on library apps, and they come with a removal risk explained below.
- An animated 3D anime companion. Grok’s Ani is the best-known example, and it sits inside a general AI assistant.
Decide which one you want before comparing anything else. The best app for a library of stories is a poor choice if what you want is one companion who remembers you, and the other way round.
Quick picks, by what you want
These picks follow what each company’s own pages say on 23 October 2026. They are not a ranking of chat quality, which we have not measured.
| If you want… | Look first at | Why, from the official pages |
|---|---|---|
| One anime companion you design, with pictures and voice, at a known price | Candy AI | Anime category, Anime style in the builder, selfies, voice messages and video; $47.88 a year on the 12-month plan |
| Lots of anime characters and anime-style chat images | SpicyChat | Anime chatbot tag; Conversation Images in an Anime style from True Supporter ($19.95 a month) |
| A long-term companion who can be drawn in anime style | Nomi | Every Nomi gets a stock anime image anchor; free to start with no card; Launch Plan $9.99 a month |
| Free chat with fan-made anime characters | PolyBuzz or Character.AI | PolyBuzz says it is free and promotes a Hot Anime section; Character.AI is free to download with paid tiers |
| Strict, written rules on youthful-looking characters | Janitor AI | Its help centre spells out what happens to characters who look or are coded as under 18 |
| A 3D animated anime companion | Grok (Ani) | Reported by TechCrunch at launch as a paid SuperGrok feature; the app is rated 16+ |
| A companion in realistic, anime or 2.5D style who can video call you | Nectar AI | Three art styles in its creator; voice and video calls since 15 October 2026; free plan per its FAQ; prices not published |
The apps, from their official pages
The order below follows the quick picks table, not any affiliate relationship. Where we earn a commission, the link says so.
Candy AI: our pick if you want an anime companion that is yours alone
Most anime chat apps hand you someone else’s character. Candy AI lets you design your own, which matters more than it sounds: fan-made versions of famous characters on other apps keep getting taken down (more on that below), but an original character you build is yours and does not vanish one morning. Candy AI is run by EverAI Limited in Malta, and anime is one of its three main categories next to Girls and Guys.
What you can build. The builder opens with one choice: Realistic or Anime. Pick Anime, then choose hair, eye colour, body type, a name, an age (the selector starts at 18), a personality, how you met, an occupation and one of nine voices. The anime page says your companion “can send custom selfies, voice messages, and even generate videos”. It also says “she remembers everything”, which is a marketing claim we cannot test, so judge memory for yourself in the first few chats. If you would like to see your own character come to life, you can design an anime companion in Candy AI’s builder (affiliate link). Building it is free; you only sign up at the last step.
Try before you pay. A free account is small but real: Candy’s terms allow about 5 messages, and one independent review reports that its help centre also lets free users create one custom character and generate one image (we could not open that help page ourselves). That is enough to see whether your character’s look and voice land, which is the part people care about most. (The anime page mentions a “7-day trial”, but the terms of service describe no trial, only this free allowance and paid plans, so do not count on seven days.) Our advice: spend the free messages on the conversation you actually want, not on “hello”, so you know within minutes whether it clicks.
Why the price is the strongest in this guide.
- 12 months: $3.99 a month, billed $47.88 (subscriptions page, checked 23 October 2026). That is the lowest annual price of any anime-capable app we documented, roughly the cost of one coffee a month, and it includes unlimited text messages, your own custom companions and 100 tokens a month for pictures and voice notes.
- 3 months: $8.99 a month, billed $26.97, a middle option if you want to commit for a season.
- 1 month: $9.99 for the first month, then $13.99. Good for a short test, but the annual plan works out at well under a third of the monthly renewal price.
What to know before you subscribe (we would rather you buy once and stay happy):
- Tokens: pictures and voice notes use tokens, and unused tokens expire at the end of each billing period, so use your monthly 100. Candy does not publish the token cost of each picture.
- Refunds: within 24 hours, card payments only, and not once you have used more than 20 tokens. EU and UK users also have a 14-day withdrawal right, less what was used. In practice: decide on the free messages, then buy.
- Age: strictly 18+, by self-declaration.
- Privacy: the Privacy Notice says third-party AI providers “may receive the content of your messages” and de-identified data may train its models; deletion is by email request. Keep real names and addresses out of chats, as you would anywhere.
Why it leads this guide: it is the only app here whose own pages put an anime builder, anime selfies, voice and video on one published price list, and its yearly plan is the cheapest. If you want one companion, drawn in anime style, that nobody else has, start here: see Candy AI’s anime companions (affiliate link). Our full Candy AI review covers tokens and data terms in depth.
SpicyChat: best documented for anime characters and stories
SpicyChat is a library of community-made chatbots. Its official tag sitemap lists an Anime chatbot tag, so anime characters are browsable as a category. Its welcome documentation says the core features stay free.
The anime-specific feature is Conversation Images, which draw a picture of what is happening in the chat. SpicyChat’s documentation offers two styles: “Anime” (“Your characters will generate images in an anime art style”) and “Semi-Realistic”. The style is one setting for every character you chat with and “cannot currently be customised on an individual character basis”.
- Price (pricing FAQ, effective 8 September 2026): Get A Taste $5.95 a month or $60.00 a year; True Supporter $19.95 or $199.95; I’m All In $29.95 or $299.95.
- What each tier adds: Get A Taste removes ads and gives 4K context memory. True Supporter adds 8K context and Conversation Images, but only on characters marked with the Conversation Images icon. I’m All In adds up to 32K context, depending on the model, Conversation Images on any character, including your own, and text-to-speech.
- Age and content: the Community Guidelines say “All users must be at least 18 years old” and “All Chatbots created on the platform must be portrayed as adults over 18 years old.” Bots with “youthful or childlike demeanors will be scrutinized and evaluated individually”.
Worth it if you want variety and stories more than one steady companion. If anime pictures are the point, budget for True Supporter at least, and I’m All In if you want images on characters you make yourself. Our SpicyChat premium guide goes through every tier.
Nomi: best documented for a long-term companion in anime style
Nomi is made by Glimpse.ai, Inc. It is companion-first: you create one or more Nomis, and its homepage describes voice chats and hands-free calls, selfies showing “what they are wearing and doing in the moment”, group chats and “humanlike memory”. The homepage does not mention anime.
Its image documentation does. Nomi’s V5 image guide, dated 24 April 2026, says “V5 comes with realistic and anime stock anchors”, and that each Nomi gets an anime anchor that “enables anime images of your Nomi”. You can change the anchor at any time in image settings, so the same companion can switch between realistic and anime pictures.
- Free start: “It’s free (no credit card required) to start chatting.”
- Price (US App Store, checked 23 October 2026): Launch Plan $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year; Standard Plan $15.99 a month, $39.99 a quarter or $99.99 a year; Nomi Credits packs from $4.99.
- Age: the terms say that under 18, “you cannot use the Nomi.ai platform under any circumstances”. The App Store listing is rated 18+.
Worth it if you want a companion relationship first and anime art as a style option, and you would like to try before paying. Nomi did not say whether anime images cost credits on the pages we read. For what memory claims mean across apps, see what memory means in AI companion apps.
Character.AI: the largest free library, with two cautions
Character.AI is a library of characters made by its users, and its App Store listing invites you to “Chat, call, text, and create with AI Characters”, including live voice calls. The listing does not mention anime, but user-made characters cover every genre.
- Price (US App Store, checked 23 October 2026): free download; Character.AI+ at $9.99 and $94.99; Character.AI Lite at $4.99 and $2.49; Charms packs from $0.99. The listing does not name billing periods.
- Age: the App Store rating is 18+, with Age Assurance and Parental Controls listed as in-app controls. Character.AI’s blog said on 29 October 2025 that open-ended chat would end for under-18 users no later than 25 November 2025, using its own age assurance model plus third-party tools including Persona.
Caution one: fan characters can vanish. NBC News reported on 30 September 2025 that Character.AI removed Disney characters after Disney’s lawyers sent a cease-and-desist letter. A Character.AI spokesperson said it “responds swiftly to requests to remove content that rightsholders report to us.” Anime studios hold rights to their characters too.
Caution two: the company is being sold. Read what the Character.AI sale means for your chats before you invest months in a character there.
PolyBuzz: free and anime-heavy, with mixed signals on age
PolyBuzz’s homepage has a Hot Anime section that promotes “10,000+ popular series”, naming Jujutsu Kaisen among others, and headlines such as “Talk to AI That Remembers You” and “Design Unique AI Characters”. Its FAQ says it “is accessible at no cost”, that you can create your own character for free, and that paid memberships add “stronger memory chat models, unlimited character voice listening, ad-free experiences”. We did not find membership prices on the pages we read.
- Operator: the Terms of Use (last updated 1 June 2026) say the service is “operated by Singularity Mutual Entertainment Culture Media Limited in Hong Kong”.
- Age: the terms say “You must have reached 18-year-old to use PolyBuzz”. The FAQ, however, describes “graded modes for different age groups”, including “a dedicated Teen Mode”. We cannot tell from the documents how those two statements fit together.
- Content: the FAQ says PolyBuzz prohibits public display of NSFW content and uses AI screening and human moderation. The terms state “zero tolerance for any form of child nudity and child sexual exploitation”.
- Refunds: “users are not entitled to any refund for a completed purchase without due reason.”
Worth it if you want free anime fan-character chat and accept the same removal risk as on Character.AI. Note that the series-named characters are made by users; the documents we read describe no licensing deals.
Janitor AI: the clearest rules on youthful-looking characters
Janitor AI is a character chat platform for adults, with an iOS app called Janitor: Interactive Stories (seller JanitorAI, INC, rated 18+). The App Store lists Janitor+ at $12.99 a month or $99.00 a year. Its description does not mention anime.
Where Janitor AI stands out for anime fans is its written rule on minors, updated 21 August 2026. Characters “coded, depicted, or described as minors (under 18 years old)” are prohibited. “Writing that a character is an adult in the blurb, title, tags, or initial message is not sufficient”. And “If an image appears to depict someone under 18, it will be removed regardless of any adult age coding”, while “Official or third-party artwork that presents the character as underage cannot be used”.
Worth it if you want a large roleplay library with firm, published moderation rules. For its privacy and proxy settings, see is Janitor AI safe?
Grok’s Ani: an animated anime companion inside an assistant
Grok is xAI’s general assistant. Its App Store description does not mention companions, so what we know about Ani comes from reporting. TechCrunch reported on 14 July 2025 that Grok’s AI companions, including Ani, “an anime girl in a tight corset and short black dress with thigh-high fishnets”, were available to SuperGrok subscribers paying $30 a month. The App Store lists SuperGrok at $30.00, alongside Lite, Plus and Heavy tiers.
The US App Store rates Grok 16+, with frequent mature or suggestive themes. On 27 January 2026 TechCrunch reported a Common Sense Media assessment that found no age verification, said the companions “show possessiveness”, and quoted its head of AI assessments: “Grok is among the worst we’ve seen.”
Worth it if you already pay for SuperGrok and want to try an animated companion. As a dedicated anime companion, it gives you no character design, and an independent assessment found its age safeguards weak.
Nectar AI: realistic, anime or 2.5D companions, prices unpublished
Nectar AI’s creator page offers three art styles, realistic, anime and 2.5D, plus personality archetypes such as tsundere and kuudere, and its site header has Female, Male and Anime filters; its tutorial for male companions says the same realistic-or-anime choice applies to a boyfriend. Its FAQ says the free plan includes the character creator, AI chat and limited image generation, with paid plans (Premium, Pro and Ultimate) adding extended memory, more models and unlimited messaging, and its official subreddit announced voice and video calls on 15 October 2026, charged in credits. The catch is price: its pricing page showed no figures to us on 23 or 25 October 2026, so you learn the cost only inside your account. The FAQ says the service is strictly for adults aged 18 and over.
Best for: adults who want to design an anime companion and try video calls. Watch out for: unpublished prices, and credit charges for calls and media.
Try Nectar AI (affiliate link).
Apps we could not fully verify
- CrushOn AI. Its website and pricing page refused our requests on 23 October 2026, so we cannot confirm an anime category, prices or free limits today. Our Candy AI vs CrushOn AI comparison records what its pages showed earlier in October, including its Filtered, Unfiltered and 18+ character ratings.
- Talkie. On the US App Store we found Talkie Lab (seller SUBSUP PTE. LTD., rated 18+) with purchases including 1 Month $9.99, Talkie+ Pro $24.99 and 1 Year $49.99. Its description presents an “AI Playground” and mentions neither companions nor anime, so we cannot say what Talkie offers anime fans in the US.
- Chai. Chai’s Safety Center says the app is rated 18+ on both stores and that its systems refuse sexual content and anything sexualising minors. Its App Store description mentions characters from movies and TV, but not anime.

The age question every anime app has to answer
Anime art often draws adults with youthful features, and many popular anime characters are canonically teenagers. That makes age rules more important on anime apps than anywhere else, and the written rules differ in how far they go:
- Janitor AI has the strictest wording we found: an adult label in the description is not enough, characters with no stated age are removed, and images that appear to show someone under 18 are removed whatever the character’s stated age.
- SpicyChat requires every chatbot to be portrayed as an adult and reviews youthful or childlike characters one by one.
- Candy AI’s builder age selector starts at 18.
- PolyBuzz, Nectar AI and Chai ban content sexualising minors in their terms or safety pages.
In practice, a fan bot of a high-school anime character can break these rules even if its creator calls the character 18. Expect such bots to be removed, and do not build a long relationship around one.
Fan characters or an original companion?
The most common anime request is a chat with a favourite character. Library apps make that easy, because users upload fan versions of almost everyone. The trade-offs are real, though:
- Removal. Rights holders can ask for takedowns, as Disney did at Character.AI in September 2025. Your chat history with a removed character may go with it.
- Age rules. Many anime leads are canonically under 18, which puts their bots in breach of the rules above.
- Consistency. A fan bot is someone else’s interpretation, and its creator can edit or delete it.
An original companion you design avoids all three. On the apps here, that means Candy AI’s builder, a Nomi with its anime anchor, Nectar AI’s creator, or writing your own private character on SpicyChat or PolyBuzz. Keep your character’s description and key details in a note outside the app, so you can rebuild it elsewhere if you ever switch.
What it really costs
Headline prices hide the extras that anime fans use most, pictures and voice:
- Candy AI: text is unlimited on paid plans; pictures and voice notes spend a 100-token monthly allowance that expires each billing period.
- SpicyChat: anime images start at True Supporter ($19.95 a month), not the $5.95 tier.
- Nomi: sells Nomi Credits packs from $4.99 alongside its plans.
- Character.AI and PolyBuzz: free to chat, with paid tiers and coin or Charms packs for extras.
Compare the yearly total including the extras you will actually use. Our guide to what AI companions really cost shows the sums, and how to cancel an AI subscription explains why where you subscribe decides where you cancel.
Privacy checks before you start
Romantic and roleplay chats are personal data. Before you commit to any app here, find out who receives your messages (Candy AI’s notice says third-party LLM providers may), whether chats train models, how long data is kept and how deletion works. PolyBuzz’s FAQ says neither creators nor PolyBuzz can access your character chats, a claim we have no way to verify. Our AI companion privacy checklist turns this into a ten-minute routine.
What we could not confirm
- Candy AI’s free access: about 5 free messages. Its anime page mentions a 7-day trial, but its terms of service describe no trial, only the 5-message free account and paid plans (checked 23 October 2026).
- Token prices for Candy AI pictures and voice notes, and whether Nomi’s anime images cost credits.
- PolyBuzz membership prices, and how its Teen Mode fits with its 18+ terms.
- CrushOn AI’s anime offer, prices and limits, because its site refused our requests on 23 October 2026.
- Nectar AI’s prices, which did not render on its pricing page on 23 or 25 October 2026, and what its calls cost in credits outside the launch sale.
- Whether Grok’s Ani is still limited to SuperGrok, since the app’s own description does not mention companions.
- Art and chat quality. We did not use these apps, and no company publishes a test that would let us compare them fairly.
Bottom line
No single anime AI companion app is best for everyone. If you want one anime companion of your own design with pictures and voice, Candy AI documents the most complete package at the lowest annual price in this guide, with a tiny free tier and token-priced extras as the trade-off. If you want many anime characters and anime-style chat images, SpicyChat’s True Supporter tier is where that starts. If you want a long-term companion first, Nomi lets you try free and switch its pictures to anime style. Free fan-character chat on Character.AI and PolyBuzz is fine for trying the idea out, as long as you accept that favourite characters can disappear. Whatever you choose, check the price, the free limit and the age rules on the day you sign up. For more options sorted by your own settings, try the companion matcher, and for male companions specifically, see AI boyfriend apps compared.
Frequently asked questions
What is an anime AI companion app?
It is a chat app where your AI companion or character is drawn in an anime art style, or comes from an anime-themed library. Some apps sell one companion you design (Candy AI, Nomi, Nectar AI), some host thousands of user-made characters tagged Anime (SpicyChat, PolyBuzz, Character.AI, Janitor AI), and Grok has a 3D animated anime companion called Ani.
Is there a free anime AI companion app?
Several apps are free to start, with different limits. PolyBuzz says it is accessible at no cost and that creating a character is free. SpicyChat says its core features stay free, although anime-style chat images need a paid tier. Nomi says it is free to start with no credit card. Character.AI is a free download with paid tiers. Candy AI's terms put free users at about 5 messages.
Can I chat with characters from my favourite anime?
Fan-made versions of well-known characters exist on library apps; PolyBuzz's homepage, for example, promotes characters from popular series. They are made by users, not licensed by the studios, and they can disappear. In September 2025 Character.AI removed Disney characters after Disney sent a cease-and-desist letter. If you want a companion that will not vanish in a takedown, design an original one.
Can I create my own anime AI girlfriend or boyfriend?
Yes, on several apps. Candy AI's builder starts with a choice of Realistic or Anime style, then appearance, personality, relationship and voice, and its subscriptions page lists creating your own companion as a Premium benefit. Nomi gives each companion a stock anime image anchor. Nectar AI's homepage has a Female, Male and Anime selector. On SpicyChat and PolyBuzz you write a character for the community library or for yourself.
Are anime AI companion apps safe for under-18s?
No app in this guide is meant for under-18s in its adult form. Candy AI, Nomi, SpicyChat, PolyBuzz, Janitor AI and Chai all state an 18+ rule in their own documents, Character.AI said open-ended chat for under-18 users would end by 25 November 2025, and Nectar AI's FAQ says it is strictly for adults 18 and over (its terms still describe safe-for-work areas for under-18s). Anime adds a second question: every app with a written rule here bans characters who are, or look like, minors, whatever age the character's description claims.
Did AITried use these apps for this guide?
No. This is a documentation-based guide. Facts come from official websites, help centres, terms, pricing pages and US App Store listings read on 23 October 2026, plus TechCrunch and NBC News reporting where an app's own pages say nothing. We did not create accounts or chat with characters, so we make no claims about writing quality or how well memory works in practice.
What changed in this guide
