What AI Companions Really Cost: Subscriptions, Credits and Renewal Traps

Worked examples of AI companion costs: plan totals, break-even months, expiring tokens, trial conversions and renewal traps, with prices dated.

Documentation-based review

Built from the product's official documentation, pricing and policy pages, not from our own hands-on use. How we review

For adults. The companion apps discussed here state a minimum age of 18 in their terms. This guide is about money, not content, and is written for adult readers.

The price on an AI companion pricing page is rarely what you end up paying. Long plans are shown per month but billed up front. Introductory prices step up at renewal. Tokens and credits add a second meter on top of the subscription. And trials quietly turn into paid plans.

This guide works through those mechanics with real numbers. Where we use a company’s price, it is one we saw on an official page on 18 October 2026, and prices change. Where we use invented figures to show how a mechanism works, the example is labelled illustrative. Run your own numbers in the subscription calculator.

The four cost layers

Almost every companion app’s cost can be broken into four layers:

Layer What it is Where to find it
Base subscription Monthly, quarterly or annual fee Pricing page
Renewal price What you pay after the first period Pricing page fine print, terms
Usage currency Tokens, credits or audio credits for images, voice and video Pricing page, terms, in-app shop
Add-on tiers Higher plans stacked on the base plan Pricing documentation

Missing any one layer makes a cost estimate wrong. The examples below show how each one moves the total.

Example 1: First-year cost by plan length (verified prices)

Candy AI’s subscriptions page, checked 18 October 2026, listed:

  • 1 month: $9.99 for the first month, then $13.99 per month
  • 3 months: billed $26.97, renewing “for the same price and term”
  • 12 months: billed $47.88, renewing “for the same price and term”

Assuming you stay for a full year and prices do not change at renewal:

Plan Calculation First-year total
Monthly $9.99 + (11 x $13.99) $163.88
Quarterly 4 x $26.97 $107.88
Annual 1 x $47.88 $47.88

Over two years, the gap widens: monthly comes to $331.76 ($9.99 + 23 x $13.99), quarterly to $215.76 and annual to $95.76.

These totals exclude taxes (the page notes “Additional local taxes may apply”) and any token purchases. Check current plans on the official site before relying on them. More product detail is in our Candy AI review.

Example 2: The break-even month (verified prices)

An annual plan is only cheaper if you keep using the service. Using the same prices, here is the cumulative amount paid on the monthly plan against the one-off annual charge:

Months used Monthly plan, cumulative Annual plan
1 $9.99 $47.88
2 $23.98 $47.88
3 $37.97 $47.88
4 $51.96 $47.88

The monthly plan overtakes the annual plan in month 4. So the annual plan saves money only if you are confident you will still want the service after three months.

Now add the refund rule. Candy AI’s terms say subscription refunds must be requested within 24 hours of payment and are denied if more than 20 tokens have been used. In practice, an annual payment is a commitment from day two. If you stop after one month, you have paid $47.88 instead of $9.99.

Rule of thumb: if you have never used the product, the cheapest way to find out whether you like it is usually the shortest plan, even though its per-month price is the highest.

Example 3: Tokens that expire (illustrative figures)

Candy AI’s terms describe a monthly token allowance (“generally 100”) that pays for extended features such as image generation and voice notes. They also say unused tokens expire when the billing period ends. The pages we read did not publish the cost of a single action or of token top-ups, so the figures below are invented to show the mechanism.

Assume, for illustration only:

  • A plan costs $14 per month and includes 100 tokens.
  • A top-up pack costs $10 for 100 tokens.
  • You use 250 tokens a month.
Item Cost
Subscription $14.00
Extra 150 tokens needed: 2 packs $20.00
Monthly total $34.00
Effective cost per token used $34.00 / 250 = $0.136

Now the opposite case: you use only 40 tokens a month. You still pay $14, and 60 tokens expire unused. If you value tokens at the plan’s included rate, that is 60 percent of the token allowance wasted every month.

Two lessons:

  1. With an expiring allowance, light users subsidise their own unused credits.
  2. Heavy users of images or voice can end up paying more in top-ups than in subscription.

Before subscribing, look inside the product for the token cost of the actions you will actually use, then multiply.

Example 4: Add-on tiers that stack (illustrative figures)

Kindroid’s documentation describes a Standard subscription with optional Ultra and MAX add-ons. Ultra requires Standard, MAX requires both, and the add-ons are monthly only. It does not publish prices, saying you see the exact price for your country and platform at checkout.

Assume, for illustration only, that Standard costs $12 per month on a yearly plan, Ultra $10 per month and MAX $15 per month.

Setup Monthly cost Annual cost
Standard only $12 $144
Standard + Ultra $22 $264
Standard + Ultra + MAX $37 $444

The point is not the numbers, which are invented. It is that stacked tiers can triple the base price, and that the documentation describes cancelling each tier separately. It also says letting Standard lapse makes the account read-only even if Ultra or MAX is active.

Example 5: Where you buy changes the price (illustrative figures)

Kindroid’s documentation says buying on the web is usually cheaper than through the App Store or Google Play. Assume, for illustration only, a $15 monthly in-app price and a 20 percent lower web price.

Route Monthly Yearly
In-app $15.00 $180.00
Web $12.00 $144.00
Difference $3.00 $36.00

The purchase route also decides the cancel route. Replika’s terms say app-marketplace subscriptions can be cancelled only through that marketplace. Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription. Our guide to cancelling an AI subscription covers each route.

The renewal traps

These are the patterns that most often turn a small purchase into an expensive one.

Introductory price step-ups

Candy AI’s 1-month plan is $9.99 for the first month, then $13.99. That is a 40 percent rise after month one. Always find the “then renews at” line.

Annual renewals you forget

A plan that “renews automatically for the same price and term” will charge the full annual amount again a year later. With a 24-hour refund window, a forgotten annual renewal is unlikely to be refundable. Set a reminder a week before the renewal date.

Trials that convert

Kindroid’s 3-day trial needs a payment method and converts into a subscription unless cancelled, though its documentation says it emails a reminder one day before. The FTC’s advice on trials: if the terms do not make clear whether a trial renews, “assume it will”, and mark your calendar to cancel before it ends.

Non-refundable by default

Nomi’s terms state that payments are non-refundable except as specifically stated. Replika’s terms say refunds cannot be claimed for partial-month periods. Assume no refund unless the terms say otherwise.

Payment method limits

Candy AI’s terms say only card purchases are refundable, although the homepage also accepts several cryptocurrencies. If refundability matters to you, pay by card.

A cost checklist before you pay

Question Your answer
What is billed today?
What is billed at the first renewal?
How often does it renew?
Is there a usage currency, and does it expire?
What does one image, voice message or video cost in that currency?
Are there add-on tiers, and are they cancelled separately?
Is the price different on web and in-app?
What is the refund window, and what voids it?
Does a trial need a card and convert automatically?

Best for / Avoid if

This guide is best for adults about to choose a plan length, or trying to work out why their monthly spend is higher than the pricing page suggested.

It will not tell you current prices for every app. Prices change and some companies only show them at checkout. Use the subscription calculator with the figures you see on the day, and compare products in our guide to Candy AI alternatives.

Bottom line

The real cost of an AI companion is the renewal price, multiplied by how long you stay, plus whatever the usage currency adds. Annual plans save money only past the break-even month, expiring tokens penalise light users, stacked tiers and in-app pricing raise the bill, and short refund windows make every renewal final. Write the four layers down before you pay, set a reminder before every renewal, and start with the shortest plan when you are new to a product.
