Chai AI Alternatives: Free Limits, Prices and Policies Compared

How this guide was made. This is a documentation-based comparison from official sites, terms and app store listings read on 18 October 2026, plus a summary of recent public store reviews. We did not use paid accounts. Prices are US prices, “checked 18 October 2026”, and vary by country.

What Chai is, according to its own pages

• Operator: Chai Research Corp. Its homepage says it serves “hundreds of in-house trained LLMs” and lets users build their own AI characters.
• Platforms: iOS and Android. “CHAI WEB” is listed as “Coming Soon”.
• Age: its EULA says Chai is “strictly restricted to users aged 18 and older”.
• Content: mature themes and fictional violence may appear, but sexually explicit images or videos “of any kind” are prohibited.
• Store details: Google Play shows “Contains ads”, “In-app purchases”, 10M+ downloads and an 18+ rating.

The listing does not explain what each item includes. Check inside the app before buying, and note that weekly plans cost the most over a year. For example, a $19.99 weekly plan kept for a full year would cost far more than the $134.99 annual Premium plan listed on the same page, even before any Pieces packs.

Why people look elsewhere

Recent Google Play reviews from September 2026, summarised without names, repeat a few themes:

• A move to a coin or “pieces” system, with a cost per chat and a daily free allowance.
• Earlier limits on the number of chats per character and chats being removed after a period.
• The cheapest subscription feeling expensive for heavy users.

These are user reports, not statements from Chai. They are worth checking against the current in-app terms before you decide.

The alternatives

Character.AI

The strongest free offer on paper. Its help centre says messaging is free and unlimited on every plan, including free, and voice calls are free.

• Paid (US App Store, checked 18 October 2026): Character.AI Lite $4.99 a month (or $2.49 a week); Character.AI+ $9.99 or $94.99.
• Content: filtered. Pornographic content is against its terms.
• Age: full chat requires verification as 18 or older.
• Platforms: web, iOS and Android.

Best for: Chai users who mostly want free, SFW chats with a huge library. Watch out for: ads and waiting rooms on the free plan. See Character AI not working if it misbehaves.

PolyBuzz

The Google Play listing names CLOUD WHALE INTERACTIVE TECHNOLOGY LLC, shows 50M+ downloads, and is rated 18+ with ads and in-app purchases. The listing promises “Easy and Free Conversations”. The website offers image generation, character creation and a Subscriptions page.

• Age: its terms say users under 18 are prohibited worldwide, with third-party age verification in the UK.
• Price: unknown. The subscriptions page did not load for us.

Best for: free, ad-supported mobile chat. Watch out for: the terms say completed purchases are generally not refunded “without due reason”.

Talkie

Talkie: Creative AI Community on Google Play is published by SUBSUP, rated 18+, and shows 50M+ downloads, ads and in-app purchases. It describes “extended memory” and creation tools for images, video and audio.

• Price: unknown for the main app.
• iOS: we found only a separate app, Talkie Lab, on the US App Store.

Best for: Android users who like a creative community. Watch out for: recent reviews question whether paid memory upgrades make a noticeable difference.

SpicyChat

An adult platform whose guidelines require users to be 18 or older. It says core features stay free.

• Price (official pricing FAQ, checked 18 October 2026): $5.95, $19.95 or $29.95 a month.
• Memory: 4K to 32K context depending on tier.
• Platforms: web and an Android APK; no native iOS app.

Best for: Chai users who want mature roleplay and published memory sizes. Watch out for: the Android app installs outside Google Play.

Janitor AI

Its terms say it is only for users aged 18 or over. Official iOS and Android apps exist, with adult content off by default in the app.

• Price (US App Store, checked 18 October 2026): Janitor+ Monthly $12.99, Annual $99.00.

Best for: long-form storytelling with a large creator library. See Janitor AI alternatives. Watch out for: its in-house model’s context is about 8K to 9K tokens, per its help centre.

Nomi

Free to start “no credit card required”, according to its homepage, with long-term memory, voice and group chats.

Best for: one ongoing companion instead of many characters. Watch out for: the paid Standard Plan is $15.99 on the US App Store (checked 18 October 2026), more than Chai’s entry subscription.

Before you switch

• Spend what you have. If you hold Chai pieces, use them first. Store purchases are rarely refundable.
• Cancel in the right place. Subscriptions bought through Apple or Google must be cancelled there. Our cancel guide has the steps.
• Check data sharing. Chai’s Google Play data safety section says the app may share location, personal info and other data types with third parties. Compare that with any alternative’s listing, using our privacy checklist.

If Chai’s new limits are the problem, Character.AI is the most generous free option on paper, while PolyBuzz and Talkie are free with ads. If you want mature roleplay with clearer published limits, SpicyChat and Janitor AI document more about memory and pricing. Whatever you choose, read the in-app price screen on the day you subscribe, because Chai’s own store listing does not explain what each item includes.
