Character AI Alternatives in 2026: How to Choose the Right One

A criteria-first guide to Character.AI alternatives: filter level, memory, personas, group chat, voice, price, privacy and age rules for 10 apps.

Adults only. Several apps in this guide are built for adults, and every app here that states an age rule sets it at 18 or older for full access. This guide is non-explicit.

How this guide was made. This is a documentation-based comparison. We did not use paid accounts on any of these services. Every fact comes from official websites, help centres, terms, pricing pages and app store listings, read on 18 October 2026. Prices are US prices “checked 18 October 2026” and can differ by country, platform and promotion. Where we could not verify something, we say “unknown”.

Why people look for a Character.AI alternative

Character.AI is still one of the most generous free chat platforms on paper. Its help centre says messaging stays free and unlimited for all users. People usually look elsewhere for one of five reasons:

  • Content rules. Character.AI’s help centre says pornographic content is against its terms and “will not be supported at any point in the future”.
  • Age changes. Character.AI now runs age assurance on every account. Users placed in its under-18 experience get a reading mode without open-ended chat.
  • Memory. Its own FAQ says characters “appear to forget things” because the model can only consider a limited amount of recent conversation.
  • Ads and waiting rooms. The free plan shows ads, and the c.ai+ FAQ describes waiting rooms at busy times.
  • Something it does not do the way you want, such as a different style of persona, group chat or voice.

If your problem is that Character.AI is simply down or misbehaving, see Character AI not working before switching.

The criteria framework

Use the same twelve questions for every app. Write your top three priorities down first, because no app wins on all of them.

1. Filter level

We group apps into three bands based only on what their own policies say:

Band What the policy says Examples in this guide
Filtered Adult sexual content is not allowed Character.AI
Semi-open Mature themes allowed for adults, with limits such as no explicit images Chai, Janitor AI (app version off by default)
Unfiltered settings Adult content allowed behind a toggle or rating for adults, with a prohibited list that still applies SpicyChat, CrushOn AI, Candy AI, Nomi

“Unfiltered” never means “no rules”. Every platform here bans content involving minors and other illegal material. Our guide to Character AI alternatives with no filter explains what these labels mean in practice.

2. Memory

Look for two numbers: the context window (how much recent text the model reads) and any long-term memory tool (pinned messages, memory managers, summaries).

3. Personas

There are two kinds. A character persona is the bot. A user persona is who you are in the story. See alternatives with personas for a full comparison.

4. Group chat

Can several characters share one conversation, and is it free?

5. Voice

Voice messages, text-to-speech, or live calls?

6. Images

Generated chat images, selfies or video, and whether they cost tokens or credits.

7. Free tier

Unlimited messages, a daily cap, a small sample, or coins?

8. Price

Compare the yearly cost, not the headline monthly price.

9. Privacy

Is your chat used for training, and can you opt out or delete it?

10. Age rules

Self-declared birthday, selfie check, or ID?

11. Platforms

Web, iOS, Android, or a direct download outside the stores?

12. Cancellation route

Where you bought decides where you cancel. Our guide to cancelling an AI subscription covers each route.

If you want a quick starting point, our companion matcher asks about these priorities and suggests where to look.

Character.AI: the baseline

So you know what you are comparing against, here is what Character.AI’s own pages say:

  • Free: free and unlimited messaging on every plan, with ads on the free plan.
  • Paid (US App Store, checked 18 October 2026): Character.AI Lite at $4.99 or $2.49, and Character.AI+ at $9.99 or $94.99. The help centre says lite is $4.99 a month or $2.49 a week in the US.
  • Memory: pinned memories, with 15 pins on free and 30 on paid plans according to the lite comparison table.
  • Voice: Character Calls and Character Voice, which the FAQ says are free for all users.
  • Group chat: multi-character group chats, described in its September 2025 community update.
  • Personas: creating a persona is one of the tasks listed in its Charms FAQ.
  • Age: accounts need users aged at least 13 (16 in Europe). Full chat requires verification as 18 or older.
  • Privacy: users in the EEA and UK can turn off “Improve the Model for Everyone” to stop new chats being used for training.

The alternatives

Janitor AI

Operated by JanitorAI Inc. Its terms (last updated 8 October 2026) say the platform is “intended solely for users who are at least 18”. Its content policy permits adult content between consenting adult characters, with a long list of banned categories and no explicit images. Its help centre says the mobile app has adult content turned off by default to meet app store rules.

  • Memory: the help centre says its in-house model, JLLM, reads “around 8k-9k tokens” of context, and offers a chat memory field.
  • Personas: yes, with a main persona and the option to swap.
  • Models: the terms allow you to configure an API proxy, and describe a paid janitor+ Router credit system.
  • Price: Janitor+ Monthly $12.99 and Janitor+ Annual $99.00 on the US App Store, checked 18 October 2026.

Best for: adults who want a large library of user-made characters and control over the model. Watch out for: Router credits can be used up even when a reply is filtered or interrupted, according to the terms. See Janitor AI alternatives.

Chai

Operated by Chai Research Corp. Its app EULA says Chai is “strictly restricted to users aged 18 and older” and that adult-oriented themes may appear, while sexually explicit images and videos are prohibited. The website lists iOS and Android apps, with web “Coming Soon”.

  • Price (US App Store, checked 18 October 2026): Premium Subscription (Monthly) $13.99, Ultra Subscription (Monthly) $29.99, plus “Pieces” packs from $2.79.
  • Memory, personas, group chat: unknown from the pages we read.

Best for: mobile-first users who want quick chats with community bots. Watch out for: recent Google Play reviews often describe changes to daily limits and a per-chat coin system. See Chai AI alternatives.

SpicyChat

SpicyChat’s community guidelines say all users must be at least 18. Its docs describe an NSFW display toggle and a blur option.

  • Price (official pricing FAQ, checked 18 October 2026): Get A Taste $5.95 a month, True Supporter $19.95, I’m All In $29.95. Annual: $60.00, $199.95 and $299.95.
  • Memory: 4K context on the entry tier, 8K on True Supporter, and up to 32K on the top tier, plus a Memory Manager.
  • Personas: up to 10, 50 or 100 user personas depending on tier.
  • Group chat: 2 to 10 chatbots in one chat, available to free and paid users.
  • Voice and images: text-to-speech on the top tier; conversation images from True Supporter up.
  • Platforms: web, and an Android APK downloaded from its own site. Its docs say there is no native iOS app.

Best for: people who want published context sizes and tiered persona limits. Watch out for: installing an APK outside Google Play means skipping store protections.

CrushOn AI

The site footer names TECHIEPIE LTD, with an address in Nicosia, Cyprus. Characters carry one of three ratings: Filtered, Unfiltered or 18+. Viewing sensitive content requires confirming you are 18, and the site shows an age verification flow run by Didit.

  • Plans: Free, Standard, Premium and Deluxe, monthly or annual. Prices did not load in the pages we could read, so they are unknown here.
  • Memory: save memory and auto-summarised memories.
  • Personas: “profile cards” you can attach to a chat.
  • Group chat: up to 5 characters, for subscribers only.
  • Voice: voice messages and character voices, with credits and a daily voice limit.

Best for: adults who want per-character content ratings. Watch out for: a site string says membership extensions are non-refundable. See Candy AI vs CrushOn AI.

Candy AI

Operated by EverAI Limited, Malta. The terms say free users can send a maximum of about 5 messages, and paid users get unlimited messaging plus a monthly token allowance (generally 100) for images and voice.

  • Price (official subscriptions page, checked 18 October 2026, USD): 1 month $9.99 for the first month, then $13.99 a month; 3 months $8.99 a month (billed $26.97); 12 months $3.99 a month (billed $47.88).
  • Refunds: within 24 hours, card payments only, and refused if more than 20 tokens were used.

Best for: adults who want images, voice and video in one companion product. Watch out for: tokens expire at the end of each billing period. Read our Candy AI review and Candy AI alternatives.

Nomi

Nomi’s homepage says it is free to start “no credit card required” and that it aims to “remain unfiltered and uncensored”. It describes short, medium and long-term memory, voice messages and calls, selfies, art generation and group chats with several Nomis.

  • Price (US App Store, checked 18 October 2026): Standard Plan $15.99, Standard Plan Yearly $99.99, plus Nomi Credits packs.

Best for: one ongoing companion relationship with long-term memory. Watch out for: its descriptions focus on your own Nomis rather than a public library of community characters, so it suits a different need from Character.AI.

Kindroid

The App Store listing names Beautifully Incorporated and describes custom backstories, “key memories”, generated selfies, real-time voice calls and internet access.

  • Price (US App Store, checked 18 October 2026): Kindroid Subscription $15.99, Yearly $159.99, Ultra $28.99, MAX $68.99, plus selfie and audio credits.

Best for: people who want to design one detailed companion. Watch out for: add-ons and credits can raise the real monthly cost.

Replika

Operated by Luka, Inc. The App Store listing describes text, voice and video calls, memory, image generation and avatar customisation. The homepage lists a “Web App (Legacy)”.

  • Price (US App Store, checked 18 October 2026): several subscription options, with monthly items at $7.99 and $14.99 and annual items at $49.99 and $69.99.

Best for: a single supportive companion rather than roleplay with many characters. Watch out for: the listing describes one companion (your “Rep”) rather than a library of community characters.

Talkie

The Google Play listing for Talkie: Creative AI Community (developer SUBSUP) is rated 18+, contains ads and in-app purchases, and describes “extended memory” and creation tools for image, video and audio.

  • Price: unknown for the main app. On the US App Store we found only a separate app, Talkie Lab.

Best for: Android users who want a creative, community-led catalogue. Watch out for: iOS availability in the US was not confirmed.

PolyBuzz

The Google Play listing names CLOUD WHALE INTERACTIVE TECHNOLOGY LLC, is rated 18+ and contains ads and in-app purchases. Its terms say minors under 18 are prohibited worldwide and that UK users must pass third-party age verification.

  • Price: unknown. The website has a Subscriptions page that did not load for us.

Best for: free, ad-supported chat with a large, genre-tagged library. Watch out for: the terms say completed purchases are generally not refunded without due reason.

Privacy and safety checks before you switch

  • Training. Character.AI’s training data documentation says user interaction data is one of its sources. Candy AI’s privacy notice says de-identified interactions may be used to train models and that third-party LLM providers may receive message content.
  • Deletion. Check whether deleting a character deletes the chats too.
  • Regulation. The FTC opened an inquiry in September 2025 into seven companies offering AI chatbots that act as companions, including Character Technologies.

Our AI companion privacy checklist turns these into questions you can answer in ten minutes.

How to choose in five minutes

  1. Pick your filter band from the table above.
  2. Cross out any app that lacks your must-have feature (memory, personas, group chat or voice).
  3. Compare the yearly cost of what is left.
  4. Check the age verification method you are comfortable with.
  5. Find the cancel route before paying.

If you write your own characters, our roleplay studio helps you draft a portable character sheet you can reuse on whichever platform you choose.

Bottom line

The right Character.AI alternative depends on why you are leaving. If it is content rules, look at the semi-open and unfiltered bands, and read their prohibited lists. If it is memory, compare published context sizes and memory tools. If it is cost, remember that Character.AI’s free tier is already unlimited on paper, and many alternatives cost more once credits are added. Check every price on the day you subscribe, because several of these companies changed pricing in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is the closest free alternative to Character.AI?

On paper, Character.AI itself is still unusually generous: its help centre says messaging is free and unlimited on every plan. Among alternatives, SpicyChat says its core features stay free, and PolyBuzz and Talkie are free to download with ads and in-app purchases. Free limits change often, so check the current pricing page.

Which alternatives allow adult content?

Janitor AI, SpicyChat and CrushOn AI describe adult content settings for verified or self-declared adults, each with a list of prohibited categories that still applies. Character.AI says pornographic content is against its terms. Read each platform's content policy before relying on it.

Do Character.AI alternatives require age verification?

Increasingly, yes. Character.AI runs age assurance through a provider called Persona. PolyBuzz uses third-party checks in the UK, Janitor AI uses k-ID in Australia and Brazil, and CrushOn AI shows an age verification flow before mature content. All the apps covered here are rated 18+ on the store listings we checked.

Which alternative has the biggest memory?

Memory is described differently by each company, so direct comparison is hard. SpicyChat publishes context sizes by tier (4K, 8K and up to 32K tokens). Janitor AI's help centre says its in-house model reads about 8,000 to 9,000 tokens. Nomi and Kindroid describe long-term memory but do not publish a size.

Did AITried use these apps for this guide?

No. This is a documentation-based comparison. Facts come from official websites, help centres, terms, pricing pages and app store listings read on 18 October 2026. We do not rank the apps because ranking would need hands-on evidence.
