Janitor AI vs Character.AI in 2026: filters, memory, price and which to use

Who this is for. Janitor AI is for adults only. Character.AI allows younger users but has restricted open-ended chat to adults since November 2025. How this page was made. This is a documentation-based comparison. We have not run the two apps side by side for weeks, so we do not rate writing quality. The short answer

Character.AI is the polished, filtered, mainstream option: a huge library of characters, free two-way voice calls, apps that work well, and an age check that now gates open-ended chat. Its free tier now comes with ads and metered swipes, and the company is in a Chapter 11 sale. Janitor AI is the adult, less-filtered option: unlimited free chat with no ads, long and detailed replies, and the choice to use your own model through a proxy. Its app is rougher, its free model has a small memory window, and many users say its trending page is dominated by sexual bots. Adults who left Character.AI over filters or ads usually end up on Janitor; people who want calm, filtered roleplay usually do not.

Filters and age rules

This is the biggest difference. Janitor’s safety page says it “is a platform for adults, and we respect their autonomy to tell the stories they want”, with “zero tolerance” for content that breaks its guidelines, “including anything involving minors, real individuals”. Character.AI’s help centre says it does not allow NSFW content, and since November 2025 it has replaced open-ended chat for under-18 users with a restricted experience, sorting accounts by age assurance.

What users report: in the 50 newest US App Store reviews of Character.AI (22 to 24 October 2026), 13 complain about the age verification, including adults who say the app thinks they look younger. Janitor has its own version of this: 2 of its 50 newest reviews (2 to 23 October 2026) complain about a new age filter, one saying chats are blocked with no mention of anyone under 18.

Pick Janitor if you are an adult and filters are the problem. Pick Character.AI if you want filtered content, or if you are under 18.

Free use, ads and limits

Janitor’s free tier is the more generous one on paper: the janitor+ launch post says the version “you know and love stays exactly the same, and stays completely free”, and reviewers repeatedly note there are no ads. Character.AI’s blog says free messaging stays unlimited, but swipes, Go-ons and voice memos have been metered for free users since March 2026 (details in Character.AI swipe limit and daily message limit), and ads are now the top complaint: 20 of its 50 newest App Store reviews mention them, against 2 for Janitor (one of which praises having none).

Memory and replies

Janitor’s help centre is unusually frank: its free JLLM model has a context window of “around 8k-9k tokens, give or take”, and when it overflows “it loses track of who you are, what you were doing”. janitor+ adds “5x more context”. Character.AI offers pinned memories and describes c.ai+ as having its best memory. Neither memory system is strong on the free tier.

Replies differ in style more than in memory. Users moving from Character.AI often say Janitor’s replies are longer and more detailed; some love it (“It feels like C.AI but without the dogshit features that nobody asked for and actual models”, r/CharacterAIrunaways, July 2026), others find “the texts are too long” (April 2026). Price

Both are free to start. Paid plans in the US App Store on 26 October 2026: c.ai+ $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year (removes ads and slow mode, unlimited premium styles, best memory), c.ai lite from $2.49, and janitor+ $12.99 a month or $99.00 a year (5x context, priority messages, frontier-model swipes, Router access with per-token charges on top). Edge: Character.AI is cheaper to upgrade; Janitor needs no upgrade for most people.

Privacy and stability

Janitor says “We never sell your personal data or share private conversations with third parties for advertising or commercial purposes”. The risk on Janitor is proxies: if you plug in an outside model, your messages go to that provider under its own policy (see is Janitor AI safe). Character.AI keeps chat content and uses it to improve its models unless you opt out, and its user data is part of a company in a court-supervised sale (see is Character.AI safe and what happens to your chats in the sale).

Verdict

For adults who left Character.AI because of filters, ads or limits, Janitor AI is the natural replacement: free, ad-free, unlimited and flexible, at the cost of a rougher app and a small free memory. Character.AI remains the better choice for filtered roleplay, free voice calls and a polished app, as long as you can pass its age check and accept ads, metered swipes and the uncertainty of its sale.
