Janitor AI Responses Too Short? Causes and Settings That Help
Why Janitor AI replies come back short, from style mirroring and full context to a short-reply toggle, plus prompt and settings fixes that help.
Built from the product's official documentation, pricing and policy pages, not from our own hands-on use. How we review
Short replies are one of the most common complaints about Janitor AI. You write a detailed scene and the character answers in two lines. Sometimes it is a setting, sometimes it is the model, and often it is the shape of the conversation itself.
This guide explains the causes, drawing on Janitor AI’s own help centre and community reports, and gives fixes in order of effort. It is documentation-based. We have not run these settings ourselves, so where something comes only from users, we say so. Janitor AI is an adults-only platform, and this guide stays on the technical side.
The short answer
Janitor AI’s help centre points to two built-in reasons for short or thin replies:
- Mirroring. Its writing-style guide says “JLLM mirrors you”. If your turns become short and fast, the bot tends to follow.
- A limited memory budget. Its token guide says the bot’s “wallet” often holds between 8,000 and 9,000 tokens. Bot definitions, memory and prompts all spend from it, and once it is full the AI “quietly starts forgetting the oldest parts of the chat”.
Users add a third: a short-reply option introduced in mid-2026, according to a third-party guide, which many people say they enabled by accident.
Is it the settings, the model or the chat?
| What you notice | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Replies shrank right after a site update | A new short-reply option or changed defaults | Check the generation settings and any pop-up choices |
| Replies are short only when your messages are | Mirroring | Write fuller turns |
| Replies were long, then thinned out in a long chat | Context budget full | Summarise into memory, trim permanent tokens |
| Replies cut off mid-sentence on a proxy | Output limit on the proxy model | Raise the reply token limit for that model |
| Short replies with one bot only | Bot definition or example dialogue | Try another bot to compare |
| Errors instead of replies | A service or proxy problem | See Janitor AI not working |
Fix 1: write the kind of reply you want back
The simplest fix is also the one the help centre stresses most. Because JLLM mirrors your style, give it something to match:
- Write two or three sentences per turn rather than one line.
- Include your character’s speech, actions and thoughts. The help centre notes that this also leaves the bot less room to guess or act for you.
- Avoid vague turns. Sparse writing makes the bot fill gaps with its own choices.
Worked example. “I open the door.” tends to get a short answer. “I open the door slowly, scanning the dark hallway, and call out her name, half hoping she won’t answer.” gives the bot a mood, an action and a question to respond to.
Fix 2: ask for length in plain, positive terms
Janitor AI’s Advanced Prompting 101 lists “Write longer” among simple instructions that work “sometimes”. It warns that a cap such as “no more than three paragraphs” may be “read as math, or ignored”, and suggests a range like “limit to 1 to 3 paragraphs” instead.
Applying the same idea to length:
- Open your custom prompt (also called an advanced or system prompt).
- Add one clear, positive line, for example: “Write 3 to 4 paragraphs per reply, with dialogue and description.”
- Avoid stacking negatives such as “don’t be short”. Positive targets are clearer.
- Save, then start a new message so the change applies.
RoboRhythms suggests placing the length line near the end of the prompt. That is a community tip we could not confirm.
Fix 3: free up the memory budget
If replies started long and got thinner as the chat grew, the context budget is a likely cause. The help centre’s token guide recommends keeping permanent information, such as advanced prompts, chat memory, personality and scenario, under about 1,500 tokens.
Steps:
- Shorten your custom prompt to what you actually need.
- Tidy chat memory. The help centre’s memory guide suggests short bullet points covering environment, relationship, current plot and key past events, written as facts rather than scenes.
- Use periodic summaries. The guide suggests asking the model, out of character, for a recap and then using it as the new memory.
- If a chat is very long, start a new one with that summary.
The memory guide also warns that “more isn’t better”: overloading memory can make the AI forget or misread key details.
Fix 4: check generation settings
The short-reply option
RoboRhythms reports that a July 2026 JLLM update added a choice between short and default prompt generation, and that the short option lowers reply length. It also cites an official subreddit post about a JLLM update for shorter responses. We could not view that post, so treat the details as reported. If your replies shrank suddenly in mid-2026, check for this option in your generation settings and switch it back to default.
Max New Tokens
On proxy models, a reply token limit usually sets the ceiling on reply length. If replies cut off mid-sentence on a proxy, raise it. On JLLM, community reports say this setting does not reliably control length, so rely on the prompt instead. Janitor AI’s documentation that we could read does not address this.
Temperature
The help centre’s temperature guide suggests starting at 0.6, moving in steps of about 0.1, and staying below 1.0 for most roleplay. Temperature changes how adventurous the word choice is rather than length, but very low settings can make replies feel flat and repetitive.
Fix 5: rule out the bot
Some bots are written with short example dialogue, which the model copies. Try the same prompt with a different bot. If the other bot writes longer, the first bot’s definition is the cause. If you created the bot, lengthen its example messages.
If nothing works
If Janitor AI still feels too terse for the stories you want to write, compare other roleplay and companion apps. Start with our Character.AI alternatives or the companion matcher. Chub AI is another roleplay platform with its own settings; see Chub AI not working for its common errors. If you are coming from Character.AI because of its limits, our Character.AI swipe limit guide explains what changed there.
What we could not confirm
- The exact name and location of the short-reply option, and whether it is still present.
- Whether Max New Tokens has any effect on JLLM today.
- Janitor AI’s current default reply length.

Frequently asked questions
Why are my Janitor AI replies so short?
The most common reasons are short messages from you (the help centre says JLLM mirrors your style), a context budget filled by long bot definitions and memory, a short-reply setting, or a proxy model with a low output limit.
Does Max New Tokens control reply length on Janitor AI?
On a proxy model it usually sets the upper limit for a reply. On JLLM, community reports say it does not reliably control length. We could not confirm either way from Janitor AI's documentation.
How do I make Janitor AI write longer replies?
Write longer, more detailed turns yourself, add a positive length instruction to your custom prompt, keep permanent tokens lean, and check that no short-reply option is enabled.
What temperature should I use?
Janitor AI's help centre suggests starting at 0.6 and adjusting in small steps, and keeping it below 1.0 for most roleplay. Temperature affects word choice and variety more than length.
Is Janitor AI for adults only?
Yes. Janitor AI's help centre says its services are intended exclusively for users over 18.
