Character AI Alternatives With No Filter: What 'Unfiltered' Really Means
What 'no filter' means on SpicyChat, Janitor AI, CrushOn AI, Nomi, Chai and Candy AI: content policies, age checks and risks, checked 18 Oct 2026.
Built from the product's official documentation, pricing and policy pages, not from our own hands-on use. How we review
Adults only. This guide discusses platforms that allow adult themes for users aged 18 and over. It explains policies in neutral terms and contains no explicit content.
How this guide was made. This is a documentation-based guide built from official content policies, terms, help centres and privacy notices read on 18 October 2026. We did not use paid accounts and we do not rank apps.
What Character.AI allows
Character.AI’s position is clear in its own help centre. One FAQ says pornographic content “is against our terms of service, and will not be supported at any point in the future”. Another says that requesting the removal of its filters on its platforms “will result in a ban”. It does say it is working on a broader range of characters, for example villains who are not always polite.
On top of that, Character.AI now runs age assurance on every account. Users verified as 18 or older keep full chat. Users placed in its under-18 experience move to a reading mode without open-ended chat. So the filter question is now two questions: what content is allowed, and who is allowed to chat at all.
For a wider comparison of all criteria, see our Character AI alternatives guide.
What “no filter” actually means
When an app calls itself unfiltered, it usually means one or more of these:
| What the app does | What it does not mean |
|---|---|
| Allows adult themes between adult characters | Anything goes |
| Lets you turn mature content on with a toggle or rating | No moderation |
| Uses its own or open models with fewer refusals | No content review on public characters |
| Lets you hide or blur mature content | The setting follows you to the mobile app |
Every platform we checked keeps a prohibited list. Common items include:
- Any sexual or romantic content involving minors, including fictional characters who appear young.
- Real, private people, and realistic images or deepfakes of real people.
- Content combining sexual themes with violence or non-consent.
- Illegal activity, extremism and self-harm encouragement.
Breaking these rules can lead to removed characters, banned accounts and, in some terms, reports to authorities.
How each platform describes its rules
SpicyChat
Its community guidelines say all users must be at least 18 and all chatbots must be portrayed as adults. Chatbots with explicit language or imagery must be marked NSFW. Its FAQ says the NSFW/SFW label is set automatically and controls where chatbots appear on the front page. In profile settings you can hide mature chatbots or blur images.
Janitor AI
Its terms say the platform is only for users aged 18 or over. Its content guidelines say it “permits adult content between consenting adult characters”, then list prohibited categories. Character images must not be explicit. Its help centre says the mobile app has adult content off by default to meet app store rules, with a way to sync settings.
CrushOn AI
Each character carries a rating: Filtered, Unfiltered or 18+. Text on its pricing page explains that Filtered allows no mature text or pictures, Unfiltered allows mature text with limits on images, and 18+ is the most permissive. Viewing sensitive content requires confirming you are 18, and the site shows an age verification flow run by Didit, with the note “We don’t store your document images.”
Nomi
Nomi’s homepage says AI can only live up to its potential if it remains “unfiltered and uncensored”, and that chats are anonymised and not shared with third-party sites. Its App Store listing is rated 18+.
Chai
Chai’s app EULA says Chai is “strictly restricted to users aged 18 and older” and that users may encounter adult-oriented themes and fictional violence. It also says sexually explicit images or videos of any kind are prohibited on the platform. That puts Chai in a middle band: mature text themes, but not explicit media.
Candy AI
Candy AI’s terms describe AI-generated images, video and voice notes. They say the company may ask for more information to verify or re-verify that you are an adult. See our Candy AI review for its billing rules.

Age verification: what to expect
Age checks are spreading because of laws such as the UK Online Safety Act and Australia’s Online Safety Act, which several of these companies mention in their terms. The methods differ:
- Selfie estimate, then ID if needed. Character.AI says its provider Persona usually needs only a selfie and asks for ID only as a last step. It says submitted biometric data or ID is deleted within 7 days and that Character.AI does not access it.
- Third-party checks by country. PolyBuzz’s terms name Ondato and Yoti for UK checks. Janitor AI names k-ID for Australia and Brazil.
- Self-declaration. Many apps still rely on a birthday or an “I’m over 18” button.
Before you verify, check who the provider is, what they keep and for how long.
The real risks
Privacy
Unfiltered chats are often more personal. Candy AI’s privacy notice says third-party LLM providers may receive the content of your messages and that de-identified interactions may be used to train models. Read our AI companion privacy checklist before sharing anything real.
Money
Adult platforms often sell tokens or credits on top of subscriptions. Candy AI’s terms say tokens expire at the end of each billing period and refunds are limited to 24 hours. See what AI companions really cost.
Account loss
Paying does not protect you from moderation. Janitor AI’s terms say a subscription does not limit its ability to filter requests or suspend accounts, and that moderated use does not entitle you to a refund.
Fake sites
Popular adult chat brands attract copycat sites. Check the domain before entering card details, using our guide to spotting fake AI app clones.
Wellbeing
The FTC’s September 2025 inquiry asked companion chatbot companies how they measure and limit negative effects, especially on young users. If an app starts to replace real support, step back.
Bottom line
“No filter” means fewer refusals for adult themes, not an absence of rules. Pick the band you want: SpicyChat, Janitor AI and CrushOn AI publish the most detail on what is and is not allowed, Chai allows mature themes but bans explicit media, and Character.AI stays filtered. Then check the age verification method, the privacy notice and the refund terms before you pay. Our companion matcher can help narrow the list, and Character AI alternatives with personas covers identity tools.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an AI chat app with truly no rules?
Not among the apps we checked. Each publishes banned categories, such as any content involving minors, real people without consent, or illegal material, and says it may remove content or accounts that break them.
Why does Character.AI filter adult content?
Its help centre says pornographic content is against its terms of service and will not be supported in the future. Separately, it now runs age assurance on all accounts and limits open-ended chat to users verified as 18 or older.
Do unfiltered apps check my age?
Increasingly. CrushOn AI shows an age verification flow by a provider called Didit, PolyBuzz uses Ondato and Yoti in the UK, and Janitor AI uses k-ID in Australia and Brazil. Others rely on a self-declared birthday or confirmation.
Why is the mobile app more restricted than the website?
App store rules. Janitor AI's help centre says its app has adult content disabled by default to comply with App Store and Google Play guidelines. SpicyChat's docs say it has no native iOS app and offers its Android app as a direct download.
What are the main risks of unfiltered apps?
Privacy of very personal chats, model training on your data, strict refund rules, prepaid credits that expire, and the emotional pull of companion apps. The FTC opened an inquiry into companion chatbots in September 2025.
