Two kinds of persona

The word “persona” means two different things in AI chat apps, and mixing them up leads to the wrong choice.

Term What it is Who writes it Example
Character persona The bot’s personality, backstory and greeting The creator of the character A retired detective who speaks in short sentences
User persona Who you are in the conversation You A new deputy, 30, cautious, from out of town

Character.AI is strong on the first kind, with millions of user-made characters. If you mostly want the second kind, with several identities you can switch between, the apps below differ a lot.

If you are still deciding what to look for overall, start with our pillar guide to Character AI alternatives.

What to compare

  1. How many user personas you can save, and whether the number depends on your plan.
  2. Per-chat selection: can you pick a persona when you start a chat, and change it later?
  3. Fields: name, avatar, and a short description (“highlights” or “notes”).
  4. Context cost: persona text is read by the model, so long personas use up memory.
  5. Character tools: if you also want to write characters, how detailed can the definition be?

The apps

Character.AI (the baseline)

Character.AI’s Charms FAQ lists “Create a persona” as one of the quests that earn Charms, which confirms the feature exists. The articles we read did not state a limit on the number of personas. Its character creator guides cover personality, greeting and voice in depth.

On memory, the help centre says characters can “appear to forget things” when details were not mentioned recently. The lite comparison table lists 15 pinned memories on free and 30 on paid plans.

Best for: writing and finding character personas. Watch out for: user persona limits are not published in the pages we read.

SpicyChat

SpicyChat has the most detailed persona documentation of any app we checked. Its User Personas page says each persona can have its own name, avatar and highlights. When you start a chat, you are prompted to choose a persona, and the choice is shown in your conversation list. A new chat with the same character defaults to the persona you used last time.

Limits by tier, from its Premium Features page:

Tier Price (monthly, checked 18 October 2026) User personas
Free $0 Not stated in the docs we read
Get A Taste $5.95 Up to 10
True Supporter $19.95 Up to 50
I’m All In $29.95 Up to 100

Its profile settings also offer “Highlights” that apply to every conversation, and its tokens guide explains that personality text counts toward the context window.

Best for: people who switch between many identities. Watch out for: SpicyChat is an adult platform and its community guidelines require users to be 18 or older.

Janitor AI

Janitor AI’s help desk has an FAQ titled “How to Edit and Swap Personas”. It describes a main (“Default”) persona edited in Account Settings, plus the option to swap personas. The chat memory guide suggests a structured memory note with separate lines for the character and for “{{user}} notes”, such as outfit or gear.

Janitor AI’s terms say the platform is for users who are at least 18.

Best for: roleplayers who like structured notes and templates. Watch out for: the help centre says its in-house model reads around 8,000 to 9,000 tokens, so long personas compete with chat history. See Janitor AI alternatives.

CrushOn AI

CrushOn AI calls user personas “profile cards”. Strings on its pricing page describe creating a profile card, adding it to a chat, editing the copy inside one conversation, and choosing whether to sync changes back to a “profile cards center”. Its FAQ says character cards are personal to your account and not publicly shared.

Best for: people who want a different persona copy per chat. Watch out for: plan prices did not load on the pages we could read, so check them yourself. Compare it with Candy AI in Candy AI vs CrushOn AI.

Nomi

Nomi takes a different approach. Instead of many user personas, its App Store listing describes “customizable backstories and Shared Notes” that shape your Nomi’s identity, and group chats where each Nomi keeps its own memory across private and group chats.

Best for: building one or a few long-running companions. Watch out for: we did not find a user persona feature or limit described on the pages we read.

Kindroid

Kindroid’s App Store listing says you can “craft a detailed backstory and implant key memories”. That is a character persona tool, not a user persona tool.

Best for: designing one detailed companion. Watch out for: extra Kindroid slots are sold separately on the App Store ($3.49 for one, checked 18 October 2026).

How to write a persona that travels

A good user persona is short and portable. Try this four-line format:

  • Name and age (always an adult).
  • Role in one sentence.
  • Two traits that change how characters treat you.
  • One boundary, such as topics you want the story to avoid.

SpicyChat’s docs recommend one or two sentences for highlights, which is a sensible rule anywhere. Our roleplay studio helps you write a persona and character sheet you can copy into any app.

Privacy note

A persona is personal data if it describes the real you. Keep it fictional. Our AI companion privacy checklist lists what to check before you share details.

Bottom line

If switching identities is your main need, SpicyChat publishes the clearest persona limits, Janitor AI supports editing and swapping, and CrushOn AI lets you keep a different profile card per chat. If you would rather shape one deep companion, Nomi and Kindroid put the effort into the character side. Use our companion matcher if you want a shortlist based on your priorities.

Frequently asked questions

What is a user persona in an AI chat app?

It is a short profile of who you are in the story, such as a name, avatar and a line or two about your role. The character reads it so it can refer to you consistently. SpicyChat's docs recommend keeping persona highlights to one or two sentences.

Does Character.AI have personas?

Yes. Its Charms FAQ lists creating a persona as one of the quests that earn Charms. Its help centre did not give a persona limit in the articles we read.

Which app allows the most personas?

Of the apps we checked, SpicyChat is the only one that publishes numbers: up to 10 on Get A Taste, 50 on True Supporter and 100 on I'm All In. We did not find a stated free-tier number.

Can I use one persona across different apps?

Not directly, since each app stores personas in its own account. Keeping a short text version of your persona means you can paste it into any app. Our roleplay studio helps you draft one.

Do personas affect memory?

They use part of the model's context. Janitor AI's help centre describes its context as about 8,000 to 9,000 tokens, and SpicyChat's docs explain that personality and persona text count against the context window.
